Let's Put a Smile on That Face: MK 11 Joker Guide

The infamous Joker from DC Comics will have the last laugh in Mortal Kombat 11. NetherRealm Studios had a blast implementing their most vicious version of Joker to date.

The Clown Prince of Crime is ready to rumble with gadgets and gizmos aplenty. If you believe laughter is the best medicine, then you might just overdose when face to face with this unpredictably violent fighter.

The Harlequin of Hate: How to Play Joker in Mortal Kombat 11

Knowing which moves to use with Joker is important, but knowing when is crucial to maining Batman’s fiercest foe. Here are some tips from YouTuber MK_REO to get you started on your supervillain path:

  • Universal launchers propel opponents into the air for follow-ups. Joker has two: His 1, 2, 1 string and the Bat projectile. This leads into Forward 1, 4 then back 4, 2.
  • End kombos with the cane. If you amplify three back 4, 2 cane swings in one round you’ll trigger a krushing blow for massive damage. Physical to the other character and mental to your opponent.
  • Mind games and mentality are key factors to supplement victory. You need a strong mindset in competitive settings, so why wouldn’t you want to throw off your opponent’s in true Joker fashion?
  • The bat launcher leads into the 1, 2, 1 string. You can always go into 1, 2, 1 if you didn’t launch your opponent using it. Except for when you do Joker’s bat parry launcher in his Clown Prince variation. Instead do Forward, 1, 4 into back 4, 2. Be sure to amplify it for that extra oomph on the cane.
  • Ace of Knaves gives you a trap that bounces players into the air, letting you use the same aforementioned strings.
  • This variation also gives you a Jack in the Box that gives you enough time to start almost any combo if you can land it.
  • The third variation lets you use fire traps for damage over time and a long range high attack called Kapow! at the cost of the cane Krushing Blow.
  • MK_Reo’s video explains specific situations and scenarios to capitalize on krushing blow combos:

He’s no Joke: Joker Basics & Beginner Tutorial

Joker is a technical character with multiple combo routes to relish. Top player SonicFox tweeted Joker’s second variation is the best of the three, despite being one of the hardest to play. They went on to say this variation is one of the hardest in the game. Joker’s third and easiest variation is less viable. SonicFox’s enthusiasm should motivate more players to pick up Joker if the fact that he is in the game wasn’t enough if an incentive.

The learning curve is high, but with enough time and effort, Joker players will be laughing all the way to the bank. Joker’s meta and optimization will only improve as players like SonicFox pick up the madman for use in tournaments like Final Kombat.

Turn the competition into stand-up comedy with Noble Raptor’s combo guides. Both Joker mains from Injustice 2 and Mortal Kombat veterans should start with the basics and learn the character from the ground up to make the most of their time and be the best trickster they can be. Watching other players perform punishes, strings, and use Joker in general will help you discover all he has to offer and succeed in the Netherrealm.

Once you're comfortable with Joker's bread and butter, experiment with more complex combinations to turn the competition into a joke:

Joker breaks the fourth wall in this evil ending. Meet the League of Misunderstood Maniacs! The only thing they seem to understand is violence. Longtime fans might notice a few cameos from older titles in the series.

Why So Serious: SonicFox Plays Joker For the First Time

SonicFox said they will be ready to take the title at Final Kombat using Joker. Here’s a taste of their day one Joker to see the character in some of the best hands.
