Fall Guys capitalizes on casual pick up and play sessions, but will Mediatonic’s battle royale craze make the jump to competitive crowds?
Esports increase the shelf life of titles and their popularity. Rocket League, Fortnite, and Mortal Kombat 11 receive timely content updates to keep casual players interested, while competitive players stick around for sponsorships and balance patches that maintain a compelling meta.
All of the tournaments, talk shows, and brand battles surrounding Fall Guys’ launch might make this indie hit a frontrunner in the future of esports.
Extreme Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
Fortunately for fans and hardcore gamers, Fall Guys publisher Devolver Digital hosted the game’s first official esports competition last week. Extreme Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout featured five teams of four streamers facing off in five episodes to earn the most crowns.
Team Pigeon won with two crowns:
- ParallaxStella
- BanzaiBaby
- DistractedElf
- Techniq
Fall Guys Friday Frenzy Team Invitational
Digital media company ten/o’s Fall Guys Friday Frenzy Team Invitational shows both the potential and desire for events outside of official competitions. Seventy-two players from the FGC, WWE, speedrunning community, and Twitch split into eighteen teams to tussle for the crown.
The Pogging Polygon Team, which is a play on the Fighting Polygon Team from the original Smash Bros, won:
- CONEY
- Alpharad
- Play_on_sunday
- Deezus_Walks
Twitch Rivals Fall Guys Weekly Competitions
Twitch Rivals Fall Guys weekly competitions start this Friday, meaning Extreme Fall Guys and Friday Frenzy might be more than just tournament flings. The title extends beyond tournaments into other aspects of gaming culture.
Talk Guys - Ultimate Chatting -
All Fall Guys publicity is good publicity and the upcoming show Talk Guys - Ultimate Chatting - is no exception. Talk show host Gary Whitta and co-host Kate Stark will play with Dr. Lupo on the first episode this Thursday. The popular streamer is statistically the best player since the game’s launch. Episode two stars Fall Guy’s lead designer @GosuJoe and @OliverAge24, the man behind the terrific Fall Guys Twitter.
Whitta and Stark previously hosted the viral talk show Animal Talking, where celebrities like Elijah Wood, Phil Spencer, and Selena Gomez discussed their lives while playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Battle of the Brands
Esports organizations and gaming personalities are engaged in a bidding war for an in-game skin. FGTeev, one of the biggest YouTube gaming channels, currently leads with a $422,222.22 bid. There is only one week to go until a winner is crowned. The winning bid will be donated to SpecialEffect, a charity for gamers with physical disabilities.
Fall Guys Season 2 Sneak Peek
More content is on the way to spice up Rounds! There will be a Fall Guys Season 2 sneak peek on Thursday at Gamescom according to video game journalist and host Geoff Keighley. Whatever Mediatonic is planning, the fact that the multiplayer juggernaut will continue to receive support and patches is a positive sign. Expect more Rounds, cosmetics, and emotes alongside a new season pass when Season 2 starts on October 6.
Possible Future Fall Guys Tournament Rules & Format
Fall Guys has a strong foundation for competitive play, despite a lobby and format limitations.
Current events tally crowns for combatants across different random lobbies over a number of rounds because there’s no option for private matches. The ability to create your own room with 60 participants would amplify the action for participants and the excitement for spectators. Instead of waiting to watch your favorite competitor’s team, you’d be able to always see how they’re doing. Private lobbies also enable players to compete directly as opposed to against randoms found in whatever lobbies they happen to join.
What’s more compelling than seeing your opponent fall into the slime right in front of your face by your hands?
Fall Guys has three formats it can follow:
- Solo Rounds Only
- Team Rounds Only
- All Rounds Similar to Current Lobbies
Banning Rounds due to factors like luck or enjoyability is an entirely different discussion.
Whether or not Mediatonic can keep their player base from facing elimination ultimately depends on updates and esports. They’ve already grabbed the crown at the end of their first episode. The question is how long will they be able to hold onto it?
