Now that everyone and their grandmother has their hands on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, it’s time to find out what kind of artillery is best at getting the job done or more simply put, owning everyone in multiplayer.
A lot of guns from previous games return in Black Ops Cold War, but the large number of attachments make everything feel fresh and entirely customizable. COD’s meta is still developing, so expect patches and experience to update this list of recommended primary and secondary weapons in the future.
Best Assault Rifle
- XM4
- AK-47
- KRIG 6
- QBZ-83
- FFAR 1
- Groza
- Top pick: KRIG 6
The KRIG 6 gets the win because of its high full auto accuracy. Sure, it might not deal the most damage for assault rifles, although that’s an acceptable trade-off when you learn the number of bullets this weapon lands in quick succession. It is also ideal for flanking and moving quickly around the map.
With some attachments, this weapon can provide a bevy of headshots. Precision is power.
Best Submachine Gun
- MP5
- Milano 821
- AK-74u
- KSP 45
- Bullfrog
- Top pick: MP5
The MP5 is not only the game’s best submachine gun, but it’s one of the best multiplayer weapons, period. It’s unlocked early, practically overpowered, and ideal for taking out multiple enemies at once. Sprint from objective to objective and confidently mow down foes from a decent range.
Best Tactical Rifle
- Type 63
- M16
- AUG
- DMR 14
- Top pick: M16
The M16 comes with an asterisk because it’s fairly overpowered at long range and might be nerfed in an update. The recoil is manageable, and it’s great on large open maps like Satellite. It doesn’t require a lot of attachments to eliminate squads, however, it is not great in close quarters. The fire rate is top-notch for a burst-fire rifle.
Best Light Machine Gun
- Stoner 63
- RPD
- M60
- Top Pick: Stoner 63
The Stoner 63’s high rate of fire makes it great for long lines of sight. The thing that puts it over the top is its lack of recoil coupled with high damage and range. The one drawback is its lack of mobility, but this LMG more than makes up for that in firepower.
Best Sniper Rifle
- Pellington .703
- LW3 Tundra
- M82
- Top pick: LW3 Tundra
We’re going with a classic bolt action here. It deals more damage than the Pellington and players can one-kill with a shot to the head, shoulders, or upper torso. The larger hitbox gives it the biggest edge for the category, as a near miss can still prove deadly.
Best Pistol
- 1911
- Magnum
- Diamatti
- Top Pick: 1911
This is an easy choice. While the 1911 is the top secondary weapon, it could also work as a great primary weapon in the right hands. It’s lightning-quick and ideal for close-range combat, where it excels with high damage.
Best Shotgun
- Hauer 77
- Gallo SA12
- Striker
- Top pick: Hauer 77
This pump-action shotgun packs a huge punch when ranked up, even though shotguns are generally underpowered. IThe Hauer 77 struggles with distance and is slow to reload, but can one-shot kill with ease up close. It’s a good secondary weapon to offset ranged weapons in your arsenal.
Best Rocket Launcher
- Cigma 2
- RPG-7
- Top pick: Cigma 2
While the RPG-7 is great for taking out infantry, it can’t lock on. For that reason, this category goes to the Cigma 2, for the plain fact that it can pinpoint and lock onto enemy aircraft. To pay for that perk, however, it has a smaller ammo pool and doesn’t handle quickly.
