How to Pick a Main in SoulCalibur VI: Execution Difficulty

Published on: 05/24/2021
By: Zach Snoddy

Not every character in SoulCalibur VI (SC6) has the same learning curve. Learning how to play any character takes a lot of practice, but some are easier than others due to less technical inputs, resource management, and frame precision.

A few characters have fundamental, beginner-friendly movesets, while most of the roster relies on advanced mechanics that require more skill and experience. This varies from high input execution difficulty to more strategic approaches or mind games.

SoulCalibur VI Character Guides:

Beginner (Easy)

These are the easiest characters to play. They have simple, easy to understand movesets that lack tricky inputs. Proper spacing, whiff punishes, and mix-ups typically win or lose games for these fighters, making them perfect for players practicing the fundamentals of SC6.

Just because a character is beginner-friendly does not mean they are easy to play. They can still take a high level of understanding to excel. Some fighters are actually harder to play at the top level because they require solid defense and minimal offensive mistakes.

Many experienced players are also familiar with these characters, leading to quick reads, more confidence, and ultimately harder matchups. Some of these fighters have cheap moves that make them both fan favorites and sources of anguish. Learn as many matchups as you can because you never know who you’ll have to beat.

Beginner-friendly characters:

  • Cassandra
  • Cervantes
  • Geralt
  • Groh
  • Haohmaru
  • Kilik
  • Mitsurugi
  • Seong Mi-na
  • Siegfried
  • Sophitia
  • Xianghua

Intermediate (Medium)

Intermediate-level characters have unique mechanics, situational moves, and less straightforward attacks that require more experience to master.

Several rely on stacking or charging resources to add more utility to their attacks. Others fight with mix-ups and mind games. Regardless, you’ll need some creative thinking to play these fighters to their full potential.

While not always beginner-friendly, these characters do not have extremely difficult inputs or combos. The challenge is learning their mechanics. Newcomers should not feel intimidated, so take the time to experiment with a few.

Intermediate-level fighters:

  • Amy
  • Astaroth
  • Hwang
  • Nightmare
  • Taki
  • Talim
  • Tira
  • Zasalamel
  • 2B

Advanced (Hard)

Advanced fighters require more skill to pull off rigorous inputs and manage complex mechanics. Many are rarely seen in competition due to their high execution difficulty.

Most of these characters are very technical, relying on a mix of fundamentals and unique abilities. Others have extensive movesets that can be a handful to fully grasp. You will need to spend a few extra hours in Practice Mode if you want to main one of these fighters, although you can expect big rewards.

Many are high on community SC6 tier lists, with Ivy and Azwel often seen as the top two characters. If you are willing to prevail through time and effort, an advanced character might be just what you need to gain the edge.

Advanced fighters:

  • Azwel
  • Hilde
  • Ivy
  • Maxi
  • Raphael
  • Setsuka
  • Voldo
  • Yoshimitsu
