Have you ever played a fighting game and your opponent relentlessly attacks, forces you into a corner, and then uses mix-ups for a decisive win?
Enter rushdown characters. They’re all about closing the gap and pressuring you into making bad decisions.
Unlike zoners, who keep foes at a set distance, and grapplers, who use tactical throws to get something started, rushdown is defined by speed and punishment. These fighters want to bully you with constant attacks.
Prominent rushdown characters include: Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat, Ken and Akuma from Street Fighter, Bob from the Tekken Series, Chipp from Guilty Gear, Sheik in Smash Bros., and Magneto from the Marvel Vs. Capcom franchise.
Rushdown players often have fast reflexes and are acutely aware of every move they make. They know how to deal with an opponent's defense in order to control the pace and force less than optimal moves. Expect constant attacks, pokes, and maybe even 50/50s in these matchups.
Your first thought might be to counter with projectiles to keep them away, however this archetype is usually designed with tools to evade or play around projectiles. That being said, it is still possible to win even if it isn’t easy.
Take a look at this video from FGC legend Justin Wong as he demonstrates the technique with Magneto.
Notice how he’s always attacking and closing the distance. A majority of the game is played with Magneto against the corner. This is indicative of a rushdown style.
How to Beat Rushdown Characters
The key to playing against a rushdown character is to create space. You need to be far enough away that your opponent is forced to find creative ways to not only get in, but also open you up and start combos. Jump, turtle, and fire projectiles if you can. This playstyle requires short distance and thrives on momentum, so adapting to their strengths and exposing their weaknesses will give you an advantage in any title.
Depending on the game, rushdown characters will either fare poorly or very well against grapplers, based on player skill and the matchup.
