How to Win Gun Game in Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War Guide

Published on: 03/16/2021

Gun Game is a bare bones shooting contest where players race to get one kill with 20 weapons. The fan-favorite, free-for-all mode is fast, frantic, and finally back in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season 2. Winning requires enough proficiency to handle a variety of guns across every category.

Learn how to dominate Gun Game starting with the basics for beginners.

What is Gun Game in COD?

Gun Game is based on a simple concept: shooting ability. It removes most of the modern Call of Duty twists like throwables, Field Upgrades, and perks. Players must instead rely solely on skill.

Everyone starts Gun Game with the same pistol. Players cycle weapons after every kill. The order is always the same. The first player to get a kill with all 20 weapons wins the match, but watch out for demotions. Melee deaths and finishers revert victims to their previous weapon.

Play this mode if you want to get comfortable with every type of gun.

What weapons do you use in Gun Game?

Almost all of them.

Following the initial pistol, players start with a pistol and cycle through double pistols, shotguns, Assault rifles, SMGs, LMGs, Sniper Rifles, and Grenade Launchers. The last two weapons are fists (previously the crossbow in prior installments) and the combat knife.

Tips for how to win Gun Game

Practice the tomahawk

You can either stab someone or kill them with a tomahawk to win the game. Practice getting the hang of the arc and bounce so you have a better chance of landing clutch kills in tight matches.

Focus on getting a high score

Victory goes to the player with the highest score if time runs out, so keep playing until the match ends one way or the other. You never know if someone will struggle or receive multiple demotions.

Know when to demote

Sometimes preventing players from progressing is more advantageous than getting yourself to the next gun. If you’re far behind, then you have little choice but set other players back when possible. Be smart about demotions and only go for them when guaranteed. Otherwise you’re handing an opponent their next weapon.

Listen for footsteps

Sound is already crucial to success in Call of Duty. However, it is especially important without the help of Field Upgrades. The direction and volume of footsteps tells you where to turn, pre aim, or cut off enemies for easier kills.

Track the mini-map

Enemies appear in the mini-map via intermittent radar sweeps. It won’t tell you exactly where they are, but you’ll get a good idea of their route. Pay close attention and listen for movement.

Don’t stand still

The radar sweep goes both ways, meaning everyone else will know your approximate location. Constantly move and stick to areas with enough cover and entryways that allow you to go from the hunted to the hunter.

Crossfire is your friend

Smaller maps feature more frequent head-to-head battles. Take out someone while they’re fighting someone else. This is also called third partying. Usually the other players will be easy to take down since they’ve likely lost health.

Think first and fire second

A gunshot will give away your position, so don’t fire unless you have someone in your sights.

Prepare for the sniper round

The sniper round is one of the hardest in the game, unless you’re familiar with the class. Make a mental note of spawn points, lines of sight, and choke points. Quick scopes are another option, except those take even more practice.

Play the map

These are the same maps you’re familiar with from other modes. Regardless of the weapon rotation, you’ll excel if you play them like any other kill-based mode. That means avoiding vacant sections of the map and sticking to hot spots filled with lots of action. Kill streaks don’t matter, so set as many enemies in your sight as possible.
