While some players stopped comparing Kill Death (K/D) ratio in favor of score per minute (SPM) as the go-to measure of skill, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is almost always more fun when you’re alive.
Just take a lot at some of the players in your public lobby. The best players aren’t always the highest level or prestige, but the ones that never seem to die. No matter what route or weapon you run, they always seem to be one step ahead with another option to survive.
Let’s learn a few ways to become more like the notable COD players with more kills, less deaths, and a bit of style.
Pick the best weapons and loadout based on your playstyle
Balance unfortunately isn’t always perfect in most games, so if you’re playing with a lesser-used gun because you think it’s cool, started with it, or really want all of the camos, you might not get the best results.
Here are the top tier weapons in the game:
- Assault Rifle: AK-47
- SMG: LC10
- SMG: MAC-10
- Tactical Rifle: M16
- Shotgun: Gallo SA12
- Pistol: 1911
- Dual Wield: Diamatti
- Sniper: LW3 Tundra
- LMG: Stoner 63
Weapons to consider swapping out:
- M79
- FFAR
- Milano
- RPD
- M82
Aim for the chest and head
A majority of weapons have some significant multipliers for shooting the chest and head. An SMG that can take someone out in 7 shots on the body will be more like 5 in the chest and head.
Obviously, headshots are a premium. Train yourself, whether you’re using a sniper rifle or running and gunning while aiming down sights, to shoot enemies in the upper body. The one or two (or even three) less shots it takes to eliminate someone might not seem like a huge advantage, but it matters in a game where seconds make the difference.
Improve your movement with jump shots, drop shots, and slides
An erratic moving target is harder to hit than one that’s just running toward you. Two tactics to learn if you want to get better are the jump shot and the drop shot.
Jump shots:
Help you land headshots more safely because you can pop around corners where the enemy doesn’t expect, giving you a few extra seconds to get the kill.
Drop shots:
Quickly go prone mid shootout to reduce your hitbox and potentially get the edge on your opponent in the split second they need to move their reticle.
Slide:
Slide into enemies or around corners to dodge shots, surprise foes, and stay alive. Discover more details about jump shots, drop shots, and slides courtesy of Turboman.
Learn lines of sight, spawns, and map lanes
Understanding every aspect of the map is paramount. You don’t want to be running around randomly. Every map has sight-lines, power positions, and places to surprise enemies.
Take the time to learn where to find cover and where you can push forward. This could be a position overlooking the entrance to the B position in modes like Domination or a side entrance on the outskirts people tend to avoid because it takes longer to reach.
There are tutorials on Youtube for every map, spawn, and line of sight. The slightest amount of extra knowledge actually makes a big difference in your performance, especially if your gun skills aren’t the part of your game that needs improvement.
Pick the right Perks
Visibility is a key way good players track you throughout the match. Fortunately, there are perks that help you stay off the radar for stealthier play.
- Cold Blooded makes you invisible to Scorestreaks.
- Ninja is a perk that makes sprints more quiet.
- Ghost makes players invisible to Spy Planes.
Any advantage you can get is going to help you improve, but the above tips should help up the average K/D ratio by 20 to 30 percent.
