Last week, Season One of Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War dropped a ton of new content, including new weapons, operators, maps, and modes.
One of the most exciting pieces of news is the addition of Dropkick mode, a lightning-fast game of hot potato, but much more deadly given the winning team launches a nuke. Here's how to play, win, and improve your performance.
How to Play Dropkick
It’s all about the briefcase. Two teams go head-to-head to hold a briefcase containing nuclear codes. The player who grabs the briefcase must use a pistol, similar to VIP Escort. It’s fairly powerful, but you won’t survive long against the enemy team without the support of your allies, especially since the holder’s position appears on the map every three seconds just like a UAV.
Holding the briefcase is the only way to earn points, turning Dropkick into a game of keep away. The longer you hold it, the more points you’ll earn. Your team also won’t respawn if you have the briefcase until it is dropped (carrier dies). The first team to 200 points, or whoever has the most points when the 10-minute timer expires, wins this 12 player mode.
Dropkick Tips and How to Win
- Pump up the jams. Once you get the briefcase you can plant jammers to help you stay hidden, well, your team will stay hidden. The briefcase carrier is always going to be in danger.
- Get Perky. Both tactical mask and Flak Jacket are really good for Dropkick, as they both make equipment less effective.
- Get Tacky. Tacticals like flashbangs and smoke grenades are useful in this mode too. Anything you can use to gain an advantage is helpful.
- Don’t focus on the case. Go after the guarding team. Also, learn where they spawn and have someone guard there to help trap them while your team gains points.
- Cornering. This mode is such a good mix of frantic gameplay and strategy, that a lot of times enemies are going to hide around corners. The best way to deal with this is with weapons that work well in close quarters, like shotguns or SMGs.
- Positioning. Because the key is to hold on to the briefcase for as long as possible, and because as a team you’re vulnerable from all sides, find a corner. That way, you’ll only be exposed on two sides. Fortify positions where you don’t have to worry about enemies from all sides and you’ll get some extra points while you hold the case.
- Close Encounters. Stay as close as you can to the carrier. Don’t try to position yourself away from that player unless your team is communicating with eyes on the enemy. It’s better to be a human shield than not be able to stop an advance from the other team.
- Run Away. Sometimes running away is the best option to get more points. For example, your team might be dead while you hold the briefcase and every enemy is on the same side of the map. Score is more important than kills in this objective mode, so fleeing is a valid strategy if it can keep you alive as long as possible.
