Asodimazze Wins First MK11 Open Series Weekly Invitational for Europe

Published on: 06/04/2020
By: Tim Palmieri

Asodimazze is the first Mortal Kombat 11 Open Series Weekly Invitational champion for Europe. The Esport Empire pro was a force of nature with his Cetrion, cleverly zoning the competition.

The bracket featured mostly unknown players, fitting the theme of the Open Series. Anyone can enter and excel to make a name for themselves in the community.

Eight European PlayStation 4 Tournament players conquered the qualifiers to enter the online arena live on Mustard and Ketchup’s Twitch channel for bragging rights, recognition, and the $250 grand prize. NightBrodyaga won $150 for second and both Fabz and Dalphanate won $100 for finishing third and fourth respectively.

The format was double elimination, best of 5 matches. Let's get into it!

Winners Quarters: NightBrodyaga (Shang Tsung) Vs. YaQuz_mN (Kitana) 3-0

Zoners kicked off the tournament. NightBrodyaga held back YaQuZ_mN with a barrage of projectiles to take an early lead. YaQuz_mN pulled off some strong combos after finally getting in, but was too late. Brodyaga only needed a few hits to finish him.

The second round ended faster than Shang Tsung could drop a corpse from the sky. YaQuZ_mN struggled to close the gap and game 1 ended with Shang Tsung’s classic Friendship.

Shang’s grin extended into the next two games, where the Warlock continued to hammer Kitana with his efficient arsenal of zoning tools. YaQuz_mN tried to zone back, but took too many disadvantageous trades to fall 3-0.

Winners Quarters: Fabz (Cassie Cage) Vs. hooded_G (Sonya Blade, Scorpion) 3-1

Fabz is a steady presence in the UK scene, but has yet to have a breakout performance. The mother-daughter matchup was the opposite of the first match. Both players were up close and personal, splitting the first two rounds. However, Fabz flipped into a flawless victory with strong strings, spacing, and mixups to seal game 1.

Hooded_G switched to Searing Rage Scorpion in game 2. A swift Krushing Blow and the signature ‘Get over here’ put hooded in front. Fabz fought back to almost equalize the round, but was unable to counter hooded’s relentless unpredictability.

Game 3 swung the momentum back into Fabz’s favor after a corner combo depleted almost all of hooded’s health. Fabz adapted to duck the chain and whiff punished hooded to win the match with a convincing game 4 victory.

Winners Semis: NightBrodyaga (Shang Tsung, Erron Black) Vs. vDalphanate (Raiden) 3-1

Part of the Open Series is the potential to see unique playstyles and matches like Raiden vs. Shang Tsung. Dalphanate proved Raiden is finally more threatening after his recent buffs.

Dalphanate failed to whiff punish in a last hit situation to hand NightBrodyaga the round. While Dalphanate finished what he started in round 2, NightBrodyaga controlled the screen and spaced optimally to end round 3 with Ground Eruption punishes.

The Raiden main made almost all of the right decisions, except for a handful of missed punishes, to win game 2.

NightBrodyaga switched to Erron Black for the third game, turning what looked like a one-sided match into another last hit situation. Dalphanate’s Fatal Blow left NightBrodyaga Kritical. Brodyaga immediately used his own Fatal Blow, catching Dalphanate off guard to take the round. That momentum carried over into a decisive game 3 victory.

Thinking in advance instead of on the fly led to holes that Brodyaga tore open to send Dalphante a ticket straight to the loser’s side.

Winners Semis: Asodimazze (Cetrion) Vs. Fabz (Cassie Cage) 3-0

Asodimazze’s Cetrion is known for its patience and smart zoning. He played just outside Cassie’s shoulder charge range and read Fabz to dominate game 1.

Fabz was stuck between a rock and a hard place for the rest of the set, struggling to get in and consistently combo. Like Ketchup said, Asodimazze played more than just keep away, he strategically cut off options and approaches with a plethora of projectiles. It was a Spring Cleaning sweep for Asodimazze, 3-0.

Losers Semis: vDalphanate (Raiden) Vs. hooded_G (Sonya Blade, Scorpion) 3-2

Dalphanate’s high-risk, high reward read based playstyle paid off after losing game 1. He triggered the rare Raiden Back 2 Krushing Blow to equalize the set 1-1. Lightning struck twice game 3 with a strong showing from Dalphanate, capitalizing on projectiles with the life lead.

The switch to Scorpion was the calm before the storm for hooded, who easily took game 4 thanks to their drastically different pace. Game 5 came down to the final round. Dalphanate timed his Krushing Blows to clutch the match in his most consistent performance of the tournament yet.

Losers Semis: Fabz (Cassie Cage) Vs. YaQuZ_mN (Kitana) 3-0

Fabz’s overwhelming aggression breezed through YaQuZ_mN during the first two games. YaQuZ_mN nearly won the first round of game 3, but overcommitted to an unsafe option.

His over-anxious approach knocked him out of the tournament.

Winners Finals: Asodimazze (Cetrion) Vs. NightBrodyaga (Scorpion) 3-2

Asodimazze won a lot of online events and continues to excel with his meta defining Cetrion. Game one and two were back and forth bouts that ended 1-1. Consecutive Krushing Blows from NightBrodyaga won game 3. Asodimazze blossomed in game 4, zoning from afar and blocking up close to keep NightBrodyaga out.

Asodimazze whiff punished Brodayaga game 5 to take an insurmountable lead in the first round. Brodyaga was a few frames short of winning round 2, but failed to finish Cetrion with a punish he previously performed.

Losers Semis: Fabz (Cassie Cage) Vs. vDalphanate (Raiden) 3-1

Ketchup and Mustard expected this to be the Klash of the Day and it didn’t disappoint. Dalphanate’s teleport, grab, and lightning mixups took round 1. He then rode the Thunder Wave to clutch a close round 2 with his Fatal Blow.

Fabz returned the favor game 2, turning the tables to win the first round. Dalphanate couldn’t handle the momentum and fell apart round 2.

A single bullet sniped Dalphanate’s last sliver of health at the start of game 3. However, he kept it together this time and nailed the Krushing Blow to force a final round. Fabz continued to flip out and fire throughout the match until Dalphanate fell.

Dalphanate was on the cusp of making an amazing comeback game 4 while Kritical, but the deficit was too great. The next round was similar, except Dalphanate took Fabz down.

Fabz whiff punished what was likely Dalphanate’s first wake up attack of the tournament to end the Raiden main’s dreams of winning. Final score 3-1.

Losers Finals: NightBrodyaga (Shang Tsung) Vs. Fabz (Cassie Cage) 3-0

NightBrodyaga stayed away, and ahead, to take the first game from a safe distance. The zoning continued game 2 with Brodyaga taking advantage of Fabz’s inability to consistently block Ground Eruption. The shoulder charge wasn’t enough to get in and the pressure piled on Fabzs heading into game 3 down 2-0.

Fabz didn’t give up and closed the distance with bullets and Cassie’s anti-air, comboing into her Fatal Blow to take his first round of the set. Brodyaga stuck to his strategy the next two rounds and showed off the new stage fatalities to advance to Grand Finals for the runback.

Grand Finals: Asodimazze (Cetrion) Vs. NightBrodyaga (Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Geras) 3-2

This was NightBrodyaga’s chance for revenge after losing to the wifi warrior in Winners Finals. Brodyaga took first blood with a flawless block into his Fatal Blow. However, Asodimazze snapped back with a Brutality to take the first game.

The Sub-Zero counterpick leveled the playing field for Brodyaga game 2 thanks to his strong zoning counterplay like the amplified Ice Ball trumping other projectiles.

Asodimazze quickly adapted to keep Sub-Zero out of range and block most of the Ice Balls game 3. Brodyaga showed signs of character unfamiliarity, missing opportunities and combos Sub-Zero mains scoop up like snow cones.

The character carousel continued with a Geras switch from Brodyaga. It’s unusual to see this many character changes, but he made it work to win the fourth game.

Grand Finals was ripe for a reset, but Asodimazze thought otherwise. The Cetrion main took about two games to adapt to Brodyaga’s characters. Asodimazze blasted Brodyaga out of the bracket with Hell’s Wrath to become the first-ever Mortal Kombat 11 Open Series Champion for Europe!

Unfortunately, Disarted_SQUAD and LiL_Flakez were disqualified and unable to compete.
