Mike “BrolyLegs” Begum is a professional Street Fighter V pro that plays with his face. If you face this 15+ year veteran online, you’ll likely lose, then wonder how his Chun-Li became one of the best in the world. We caught up with BrolyLegs to learn more about his competitive journey, playstyle, and motivation.

What was the first game played?

Super Mario Bros 3 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. I was 2 years old and doing it with my disability was difficult, but I kept on trying and found a way.

What were some of the difficulties?

My disability, Arthrogryposis, a congenital muscle disorder, prevented me from using my hands on the controller. I had to use my face.

Could you tell me a little more about your condition?

I was born with Arthrogryposis. It involves the lack of muscle growth in my arms and legs. I can't walk or grab and I have to roll on the floor to get from room to room.

Let's talk about your gaming setup. What do you use?

Currently, I use an Xbox 360 controller for most of my games. It provides the most comfort and accessibility for me and my handicap.

Are there enough options for disabled gamers?

No. Every case is different and there's truly no uniform solution to allow everyone to play. Fortunately, we have started to see progress from the industry to show how important accessibility is, but we still must continue the fight.

Any particular brands or products do you recommend?

I know Microsoft does a tremendous job in exploring new hardware to help the disabled community find ways to play.

You're a well-known Street Fighter player. What drew you to competitive fighting games?

I have always been a competitive guy. I always want to prove myself to everyone. Street Fighter seemed to be my calling and I never looked back.

How long did it take you to get good?

A long time. Took me over a year before I started seeing results.

Describe your playstyle in two sentences.

I'm a very strategic player who prefers trapping my opponents. I tend to pick characters that utilize long range attacks to pressure my opponent.

How does your disability affect your playstyle? The FGC gets tough the more you improve, did you ever consider giving up?

I know I cannot fully play the game as I want to. I must improvise constantly to keep up. Fortunately, the FGC has been kind to me. If there's anyone who pushes me to quit, it's myself.

Tell me about the moment when you knew you made the right decision to pursue competitive gaming.

When I knew I could leave my home, travel to distant cities, and compete with other players who share my passion and built bonds because of that passion, I knew it's what I wanted to do.

Do you see yourself as a role model in the scene?

I don't like thinking about that stuff even though I have been told I am. To me, I'm just a competitor like everyone else. However, I acknowledge that I do help others with my story.

What’s your proudest accomplishment?

Being able to share the stage with the biggest names and compete with them.

What's the biggest obstacle you’ve overcome that you often see others struggle against?

Just learning the game with my condition in mind. I know I'm a lucky one because of what I was able to do at an early age. Many people struggle just being able to play the game they want to.

How do you help others overcome that obstacle?

I usually give them advice. I tell them to first find the way. No matter how practical it is, it's the first step to achieving their goals.
