UNIEL, UNIST, and UNICLR are all evolutions of a fighting game that went from niche grassroots support to peak popularity going into EVO for the second time seven years after its initial arcade release.
The Under Night In-Birth community from different regions formed a Discord to keep the game alive and grow the scene. Building the annual Climax of Night tournament and banding together to compete and celebrate the game out of passion, the Under Night community made a statement to the world that Mr. Wizard would answer in 2019.
Night fell over the FGC and UNIST made it to EVO 2019. Players from Japan flew in, some at the cost of their job, just to play developer French Bread’s title. A game that previously struggled to push 100 entrants surpassed 1000 on the main stage.
UNICLR, Under Night’s recent update, will return for EVO 2020. This is a testament to the strength of fans and a reason to remember that some games never die.
