Watching a team capitalize on earned momentum and churn through another like butter, all while scoring points in a dazzling way, is one of the main reasons people watch sports.
NBA 2K21 captures this frenzied action, but there are key tips to best run up the score on the digital court.
Here is everything you need to know to score more.
Six tips to improve
Make a decision about the shot meter
This year’s game changed how the shot meter works. Instead of filling up the classic green meter, players must now release their shot at the right time via a yellow spot on the meter. The closer you are to the hoop, the bigger the spot.
There’s an option to turn off the meter if it isn’t your thing. This allows for a different, more natural way to shoot. To time a meterless shot, let go of the shot button right at the peak of the jump. A lot of older basketball games use similar shooting mechanics with some even utilizing stick flicks.
Hot Zones are your friends
If you want to get the best out of your player, take the time to learn where their hot zones (spots where players have the highest shooting percentages) and how to use them. Swish more shots and you’ll find more success in every mode.
Don’t be a one-dimensional team
Be flexible on offense. That means trying to score with different players and not resorting to the same tactics possession after possession. If your star player is double teamed for instance, chances are he’s not going to be able to score, especially against someone who knows how to play good defense.
This is when you adapt with other options like outside shooters or drives into the paint. Move around and away from guards and make your shots when you’re open, or use L1 to create a screen to complete the possession.
Keep opponents guessing with a variety of strategies. Otherwise, you’ll have a bad time struggling to get on the board.
Rebound Inside Cut
The key to successfully rebounding is anticipation and timing. Run a few feet to the side of a defender and then cut inside, but time it right so that you grab the ball. Play around defenders boxing you out and always keep track of how long your players stay in the paint. You don’t want to give up an easy possession for spending too much time in the box.
Move in and out of the box based on your rotation, drives, and shots. When looking for the rebound, get as close as you can to the basket, box out any defenders, and line up with the shooter for the most advantageous angle. Press triangle when the ball is in the air after hitting either the backboard or hoop. Remember, position can mean nothing if the opponent’s timing is better.
Learn to fake
Faking is one of the most useful techniques for remaining unpredictable. Switch up passes, shots, and fakes to avoid patterns.
The same tactic works almost every time against weaker opponents, but play someone great and you’ll need to keep them on their toes. Diverse playstyles are highly recommended.
Dribble on
There’s more to dribbling than simply moving down the court. Crossover, juke, and maintain possession to set up as many scoring opportunities as possible. Dynamic play is crucial to success everywhere on the court.
