By: Tim Palmieri

Pro Tekken and Street Fighter player King Jae teamed up with anime fighting game expert Koefficient to deliver elaborate explanations that will help you spend less time on the character select screen and more time grinding in the lab.

Character crises are common. Who is the easiest to use and who lays down the hardest smack? Learn how the entire UNICLR roster works to prepare to play.

Basic Mechanics and Movement: Smart Steer, Passing Link

Don’t get pulled away by UNICLR’s tug of war mechanics. Grasp the fundamentals and take control to keep the game in your hands, then find the perfect partner to practice. Even if you excel with one character, you’ll still need to step back and adjust to new playstyles when selecting secondaries.

Easiest Characters

Start simple to ease into the mechanics or go straight for a more technical character. Don't let difficulty hold you back from playing anyone. The more characters you understand, the better you'll perform with your main.

Akatsuki

  • Guest character from Akatsuki Blitzkampf
  • One of the worst characters in UNIST
  • Now he's far better and one of the easiest to use
  • Straightforward combos and gameplan
  • Precise timing and delays required for more advanced moves
  • Strong hurricane kick
  • Very grounded fighter
  • Strong stagger, dash block, and good grab game

Orie

  • Poke and rushdown playstyle
  • Lunges can convert across the screen
  • Good normals
  • Lots of frametraps
  • Summons a Persona like entity called Thanatos
  • Uses orb setups to make the opponent block, freeing Orie to charge forward and pressure opponents
  • Simple to play
  • Combos can be challenging
  • Straightforward gameplan

Nanase

  • Extremely rushdown
  • One of the best fireballs for zoning and setplay
  • Uses wind and can float
  • Easy to pick up and play
  • Can also lunge to get in from long range

Hyde

  • Main character of the game
  • Very good in the meta
  • Fires a laserbeam
  • Wall bounce combos
  • Strong pressure
  • Chip damage, which is unique in this game
  • Great starting point to learn the game

Londrekia

  • Only new character introduced in UNICLR
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Good mixups
  • Currently considered decent in the meta
  • Can use his super then hold the opponent in place so he can run up and pressure
  • Rekka character (Has a special move with multiple hits that require multiple inputs to perform)

Mika

  • She was one of the weakest characters in the last game, although she's a lot better now
  • Brawler with a bit of the grappler archetype
  • Simple to learn, however some of her more technical maneuvers can be tricky to master
  • Mika can throw herself around the screen to mixup approaches
  • Fast-paced
  • Can stay airborne for a long time

Gordeau

  • One of the easier characters to play
  • Many consider him the best grappler in the game
  • Uses one of the most iconic moves in the series, “Grim Reaper”
  • Good for people that like to grab and want full-screen conversions

Linne

  • Good reach
  • Strong in the meta
  • Linne has one of the best fireballs
  • Setups can be technical
  • Requires the TK (Tiger King) stick input
  • Rushdown heavy
  • Simple to pick up, but intermediate to master
  • Can slam the ground to open up combo routes

Beginner to Intermediate Characters

Merkava

  • Mid screen long range rushdown fighter

  • Moves fast

  • She's still a strong character
  • Fights with a snake whip
  • Long-range and also rushdown
  • Good pressure and mixups
  • She can basically do everything, but lacks a meterless reversal

  • Won EVO last year
  • One of the best characters
  • Spider boy
  • Excellent pressure
  • Powerful normals
  • Strong setups and traps with cacoons
