SoulCalibur VI Overview
What separates SoulCalibur from other fighting games? Learn the ABC’s from Astaroth to Zasalamel with this general introduction to the series!
Beginner’s Guide
-
Sophitia is a good character for learning the game.
-
Vertical BB catches crouches
-
Horizontal AA catches side steps
-
Down A is very fast for when pressured and don’t know what to do
-
Don’t commit to AAA. Stop at AA. AAA is too telegraphed.
-
Quarter turn forward B is good at punishing.
-
Know frames, or how long moves take to use and recover in order to decide which moves to follow up with and punish opponents.
-
Right bumper: Reversal edge - red lightning attack can block everything if you don’t know what’s happening. Don’t become overly reliant on this. There’s also a blue lightning break attack which trumps the red lightning attack on the left bumper.
-
When you block too much you get a guard break where you’re briefly vulnerable.
-
Press grab or grab and backwards for two different grabs.
-
Launchers hit your opponent into the air, giving you the opportunity to start combos.
-
Crouch and attack low to interrupt and dodge highs.
Beginner’s Guide - Part 2
-
Learning block pressure mixups through Siegfried.
-
Forward A is a poke, but hold it to drop into stance. Once you’re in stance, you have the option of doing a mid or low attack.
-
You can continue using the same mid attack until the opponent guards, then go for the mixup with a low.
-
Get comfortable perceiving player mentality versus ranged and fast characters and how to adapt to different playstyles.
Movement
SoulCalibur coined the phrase 8-way run, meaning players can move in eight directions. Movement matters for evasion and offense. Characters have different attacks that help you close the gap and get on top of your opponent. Switching up side steps, back steps, step guarding, and 8-way runs makes it harder for your opponent to guess your next move. Different movement strategies apply to different ranges relative to your foe.
Air Control
Prevent people from pummeling you in the air! Influence your directional movement outside of stun to escape ring outs and combos. Conversely, test your combos to know when opponents might break free and play accordingly.
Common Mistakes
Beginners are more prone to making certain mistakes, but don’t worry, we all started as rookies. Button mashing is common for players new to any fighting game. It can be fun casually, but beyond that mashing leads to frustration. Spamming moves is similar. Maybe it works one or two times. However, competent opponents will adapt and punish your bad habits. Manage meter, get comfortable moving, don’t become overly reliant on one option, have situational awareness positioning, practice, and learn from your mistakes.
