GBFV Arbiter of the Skies: Zooey Beginner's Guide

Published on: 05/07/2020
By: Tim Palmieri

The Awakened Arbitrator takes to the skies. Zooey looks like an ordinary girl, but she’s actually Grand Order, a knight determined to restore balance in the world of Granblue. Zooey uses either dragons and lightning to fight from afar or skilled swordsmanship to excel in close-quarters combat.

Unique Action: Convergence

Zooey has a special meter for her dragons, Dyrn and Lyrn. Press X to use Convergence, her unique action, and steadily fill the Dragon Gauge. Press Forward + Square, Triangle, or Circle while in Convergence to cancel into the Last Wish, a high sword slash. This invincible move anti-airs from a short distance. However, opponents can duck to dodge.

Mix up your options out of Convergence. Cancel into other moves like lows and spot dodges to stay unpredictable.

The Way of the Dragon

The Arbiter of the Skies summons either Dyrn or Lyrn to join the fight. Both are identical and can be controlled with special inputs. Ram forward and fire beams to set up combos, keep away enemies, and alter approaches.

Press R1 to perform Immortal Thrust and fly headfirst into the opponent. The dragon will hover next to the enemy after impact. Follow up with Heavy Breath (R1 + Triangle) for a short-ranged blast, forcing opponents to either block or retreat. Heavy Breath applies a lot of pressure in the corner, allowing Zooey to continue combos. She can also use Heavy Breath without performing Immortal Thrust to cut off approaches.

Sweeping Beam (R1 + Circle) is similar to Heavy Breath, except slower. It also moves from low to high. Sweeping Beam can anti-air and keep opponents in place more effectively than Heavy Breath thanks to its longer duration.

Their moves consume the Dragon Gauge. However, the meter isn’t required to attack. Instead, the gauge lets them linger after every move, providing more potential for mix-ups.

Pull the Strings

Controlling two characters (puppet fighter archetype) at once requires precise inputs, patience, and anticipation to pile on the pressure. Puppet fighters like Zooey are difficult to learn. Relying solely on her sword is a massive handicap. You need to capitalize on the dragons if you want to win.

Spinning Slash

Zooey dashes forward and swings her sword. Press Back + R1 to perform the light version. Keep your distance and bait foes with the light version or charge forward with Spinning Slash + to get in faster and start strings. The medium and heavy variations strike faster and farther.

Watch your spacing. Spinning Slash so the sword barely reaches your opponent. There is a small disjoint, but maintaining a slight space limits the opponent’s approach and allows Zooey to convert into combos on contact.

Spinning Slash has two follow-ups. Ray Strike (R1) slams the ground low, while Bisection (Forward + R1) is a high sword swing. She can only perform one following a Spinning Slash.

Use either to increase the distance covered when closing the gap. You can also react to your opponent and go for Bisection to anti-air or Ray Strike to catch your opponent off guard with a low mixup. Condition other players to always expect the same one. Switch tactics and either perform the other move or don’t even follow up for additional mind games.

Keep in mind the medium and heavy versions of Bisection can’t be chained into a true combo against a standing foe.

Aerial Spinning Slash

Leap forward and slash foes multiple times (Forward + R1). The medium and heavy versions hit on the way up. Anti-air aggressive approaches or end combos. Aerial Spinning Slash always lands in front of the foe regardless of range.

Thunder

Summon lightning to strike at close range (Down + R1) or long-range (Down + R1 + Triangle). Zooey can even strike multiple times in front of her using the heavy version (Down + R1 + Circle). Hold down inputs to delay the attack. Thunder is great for forcing movement and blocks. Practice proper spacing to optimize this obstacle.

Spacing is also important for Thunder (Midair). Keep opponents away with short-range, long-range, and multiple bolts of lightning. Aerial Thunder uses the same inputs, but cannot be delayed.

Gamma Ray (Skybound Art)

Zoey dashes forward about an arm’s length and swings her sword straight up. Catching enemies with either part plunges them into her Skybound Art animation.

Armageddon (Super Skybound Art)

Call forth Grand Order’s true form and zoom across the screen. Armageddon is great for countering from a distance.
