How to Play Mortal Kombat 11

Published on: 09/01/2020
By: Tim Palmieri

Mortal Kombat 11 continues the violently epic saga with new and returning fan-favorite characters, modes, and mechanics. Customize skins and abilities to land Krushing Blows on your own terms or learn more about the roster through the story mode. No matter how you choose to play Mortal Kombat 11—between the story, Towers of Time, and online fights—there are now more ways than ever to enter the arena and hear the announcer yell, “Fatality!"

What Character Should I Main?

Selecting a character to call your own and hone can be just as difficult as winning matches.

Train with different archetypes like zoners and brawlers to get a feel for the roster. Time spent playing different fighters is never wasted. Gain a better understanding of matchups, character-specific combos, and countermeasures to further your main in the meta.

What is Fatality?

Brutal, violent, and hard to keep your eyes on, Fatalities are finishing moves that make Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat. They can only be performed after your opponent’s health hits zero and you hear the famous “Finish Him/Her.” Every character has unique Fatalities and specific inputs, such as Johnny Cage splitting his opponents in half to use as puppets and Shang Tsung summoning the undead to rip out his opponent’s organs before removing their entire skeleton.

What is Brutality?

Brutalities are just as graphic as Fatalities, but harder to execute because they require specific conditions and combos to trigger. Possible conditions include performing a Mercy, winning with specific moves, attacking from a set distance, having a certain amount of health, never blocking, and more. Every character’s brutalities are unique, like Scorpion lighting the opponent on fire and Liu Kang crushing foes with arcade machines.

What is a Fatal Blow?

Fatal Blows are gruesome special moves accessible after your health drops below 30%. This strategic comeback mechanic can only be used once per set, creating a risk versus reward dynamic. However, Fatal Blows are blockable and can miss, giving opponents a chance to counter. In addition, players must wait 10 seconds to use it again if the attack fails. Learn which moves combo into Fatal Blows to crush the kompetition. Erron Black’s flashy Fatal Blow features a bullet barrage, followed by two coins tossed into the air, a thrown revolver that Erron catches off the face of his foe, then a final two shots ricocheted off the coins into the opponent’s head.

What is a Krushing Blow?

Krushing Blows crack bones and damage organs in true Mortal Kombat fashion. Completing specific requirements unique to every character triggers an X-ray effect, complete with wince-worthy sounds and gory graphics. Every Krushing Blow can only be performed once per match. They have different effects like dealing additional damage and extending combos. Learn your own as well as your opponent’s in order to know what strings and situations to avoid. An uppercut is the only Krushing Blow shared by the entire cast. Punishing a high attack or countering breaks the opponent's jaw.

What is the Dual Meter System and How Do I Interact With Stages?

In the bottom left-hand corner of the screen are offensive and defensive meters. The names are self-explanatory. They enhance attacks, help you escape combos, and let you use interactable elements unique to specific stages.

What is a Mercy?

Performing a Mercy is all about the disrespect. Best used to troll friends or make a statement, Mercy gives your opponent a second chance after their health hits zero. Meanwhile, your health stays the same, so think twice before throwing the game.
